この美しいアルバムは、ルディ・ヴァン・ゲルダーがエンジニアを担当し、多くのジャズの歴史が生まれたニュージャージー州イングルウッド・クリフの自宅スタジオで制作したものだ。ギター演奏に革新的技法を持ち込んだロニー・ジョンソンとエルマー・スノーデンの初競演が呼び物となっている。もっとも二人の友情は、ジャズとブルースの初期に揃って登場した1920年代にまでさかのぼるのだが。シングルノート6弦のソロ演奏の父ジョンソンは、ブルースとバラード、それにジャズを集めたこのセレクションで、素晴らしい声で両義性のあるJelly Roll Bakerや苦悩に満ちたBack Water Blues(1927年に彼が初めてカットしたベシー・スミスの曲)を的確この上ない音程と冷え冷えとしたニュアンスで歌い上げている。スノーデンはもっぱら伴奏に徹しているが、その呼吸は見事に合っている。 --Ted Drozdowski

???1967年発表のサム・マゲットのこの記念すべきフル・デビューアルバムこそが、ブルース・アルバムの最高傑作と思っている人は多い。いささか大げさな気もするが、ここに収められた全11曲（さらに別ヴァージョン1曲）は確かにそう言うにふさわしい出来だ。ストレートな感情表現がドラマチックでもあり、飾り気のない素朴さはエレクトリックなサウンドではなかなか表現できるものではない。サムの元気な歌声は頭ではなく、心そして腹の底から発しなければ出せるものではない。流れるようにメロディックなギターワークは、BBキング風ではあるが、ややバディ・ガイっぽい鋭く熱い雰囲気もあり、味がある。このミシシッピ出身のアーティストが32才の若さで他界してから、今作はブルースの歴史においても不思議な位置付けをされてきた。ロバート・ジョンソンの数少ない作品のルーツがデルタブルースにあるのと同様、あらゆる意味で今作のルーツはシカゴブルースにあるといってよいだろう。(Marc Greilsamer, Amazon.com)
